I did a pro-bono 5400 translation for a spinal cord lesion research group this summer which would have cost them 300-400 euros. I also made a small donation to Wikipedia since it is very handy, I use it a lot and think it deserves support. I'll donate more at some point.
I also give occasionally to almost any deserving charity as long as they are not expecting a regular monthly or annual donation as I never plan ahead in these times of economic doubt.

Buying ONCE lottery tickets in Spain is helping visually challenged or otherwise disabled people, so I often buy tickets, even though there is very little chance of winning anything - I also often forget to check them!
(ONCE: Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles (National Organization of Spanish Visually Impaired People), is a Spanish foundation founded on December 13, 1938 to raise funds to provide services for the blind and people with serious visual impairment.

Although much criticized, Wikipedia is a great source for free knowledge, the way it should be. I support their cause. Venus Project is also a great movement. Check it out on the web if you haven't yet folks.

I donated to the Japan/Tsunami fund and sent some money to a Japanese friend in the disaster zone, and I have given a couple of loans to Kiva to help people start/maintain small businesses in developing countries. Also I have donated to several kickstarter cultural projects. I see that several people here have donated to Wikipedia...I think that may be my next project.

This year, I've been sponsoring a "sister" at Women for Women.
The sponsorship program supports women survivors of war and conflicts as they progress through a one-year program that helps them rebuild their lives. My money goes to help women receive job-skills training, business and money management basics and rights awareness education.
I also get to correspond directly with her and get to know her life and her goals.

I am so proud of my "sister's" progress towards independence! I plan to continue with this organization and sponsor another "sister" when my current one finishes her program.
I feel I have benefited as much - perhaps more - as she has; my "problems" pale in comparison to hers, yet I have detected nothing but optimism, determination and hope in her letters. It certainly has made me aware of how privileged my family and I truly are.
Having spent years working at NGOs, I am exceedingly wary about the financial assistance I provide, but the Annual Reports from Women for Women show a responsible use of donated funds.
I don't find the poll to be rude in the slightest and I can't imagine why anyone would. As always, responding is voluntary. ▲ Collapse

Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
Last year and this one my family are donating to different causes instead of buying big gifts. We buy each other small items and donate the rest. With the downturn in the economy, there has been a huge increase in abandoned animals, especially horses, dogs and cats. Last winter was really harsh and many horses were found emaciated and in such dreadful condition they had to be destroyed. There has also been a big problem with puppy ... With the downturn in the economy, there has been a huge increase in abandoned animals, especially horses, dogs and cats. There has also been a big problem with puppy farms here, though recent legislation may help. It is also possible to help by volunteering time to clean stables, walk dogs etc.
The second charity is run by Capucin monks and gives hot meals to the homeless (or anyone who shows up, no questions asked) and also food bags.

The local organizations do wonders with the little they have so, whenever possible, I chip in. Also because they help ME a lot. On a regular basis I find abandoned puppies in my garden, thrown away in the middle of the night, and with the help from Michaela who runs the www.artemis-crete-rescue.com or other local animal organizations they find homes in Germany or Holland.
