Spanish term

defensor

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
I'm struggling to think what we call this in English - "advocate" doesn't seem right (although is my current best option), "defender of children's right" seems over the top, "ombudsman" doesn't seem right in this situation...

It's taken from a document about protecting children who engage in extracurricular sports activities.

"Recomendamos la implantación de la figura del defensor o defensora de los menores en la Dirección General de Deportes"

Any bright ideas please?
Many thanks

@Toni Castano Sorry, I forgot to say: it's a current document, just been written.
Comunican (asker) Jul 8, 2020:
@Toni Castano It's a document that looks at measures that can be implemented to protect school children who engage in extracurricular activities. Measures include monitoring and stopping bullying and "la implantación de la figura del defensor o defensora de los menores en la Dirección General de Deportes"

@Toni Castano Good point, which I did not consider. In this case, perhaps the true meaning is "protector de menores" (from harrassment or such) which, IMHO, rules out "advocate". In this case the answer proposed by Comunican would be fine, provided "rights" is omitted.
Toni Castano Jul 8, 2020:
Defensor del menor in the Dir. Gen. de Deportes? Comunican, I´m still rubbing my eyes. What kind of text is this, when was it written (date is essential, since the Defensor del Pueblo in the Autonomous Community of Madrid doesn´t exist any more, as you may know) and why specifically this person for the Dirección General de Deportes? Defender of Minors (Deputy Ombudsman) might be a first option for many to choose here, but I don´t understand what an Ombudsman has to do in a Directorate General for Sport. Very strange query.

@Defensor de menores I Believe in Argentina it's an official judicial rank/instance for juvenile defense. See refs. "Children's ombudsman, children's commissioner, youth commissioner, child advocate, children's commission, youth ombudsman or equivalent body is a public authority in various countries charged with the protection and promotion of the rights of children and young people"

Yo diría advocate. It's what he is. I think you were right in your initial translation.

agree Sarah Verger : I think Children's Ombudsman would be good for a national post but in this context Children's Advocate

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks all, I went for "advocate", as it had been my initial thought and ombudsman didn't seem quite right to me. Thanks again. "

advocate

I'd go with your instincts here. A youth or children's advocate sounds fine in this context.

Even with the additional context provided in Discussion, I'd stick with 'advocate' if a natural-sounding text (that fits) is a priority. The use of 'protector' here would result in a foreignizing effect. In the end, advocates speak-up on behalf of others. In doing so, are they not defending them?

(children's) ombudsman

Although some people may be reluctant to choose this (and I must admit it's always sounded a bit weird to me), the Wikipedia description seems to fit and also offers several synonyms:

"A children's ombudsman, children's commissioner, youth commissioner, child advocate, children's commission, youth ombudsman or equivalent body is a public authority in various countries charged with the protection and promotion of the rights of children and young people, either in society at large, or in specific categories such as children in contact with the care system. I think a stronger term than just "advocate" is needed here, especially if it's to stop bullying and paedophilia...

We recommend the implementation of the youth ombudsman in the General Sport Management Team.
