English term or phrase: easy sweep pattern
Guten Morgen!

Ich stehe bei diesem "easy sweep" buchstäblich auf dem Schlauch. In einschlägigen englischsprachigen Texten kommt es oft im Zusammenhang mit Formstücken vor. Referenznormen BS 143 and BS 1256.

Der zu übersetzende Satz lautet:

For all pipework carrying fluids (except oil) easy sweep pattern fittings shall be used with medium radius bends.

Danke im Voraus für Eure Hilfe!

SWEEP

A "bend" ("Bogen") conveys a gentler turn [i.e. a larger radius] in pipework than an "elbow" ("Winkel").

Among the types of bend, a "long-sweep bend" ("langer Bogen") has a gentler turn than a "short-sweep bend" ("kurzer Bogen").

Maybe the origin of this terminology was the passing of a shape/pattern through sand, which would then form the mould/pattern of the component to be cast.

So SWEEP literally indicates a bend.
I speculated that "Easy Sweep" might be a colloquial expression for a gentle bend, or perhaps a brand/model name for a type of bend.

EASY SWEEP

Easy-sweep may relate to suspended/settled particulates being easily 'swept along' (i.e. carried) by the flow of water.
"[...], a single pipe serves to carry both soilwater and wastewater discharges directly down to the drains, so that the soil pipe or stack may serve as a ventilation stack pipe to the drains. [....] At the base of the soil pipe is a large radius or easy sweep bend to facilitate clearing blockages. Whether the soil pipe is run inside or outside the building, there should be a large radius bend at its connection to an inspection chamber."

Alternatively, in conjunction with chimneys, a more literal meaning of sweeping (with a broom) could be intended. On the other hand, it might still have the connotation of the gas flow 'sweeping along' (i.e. carrying) the suspended/settled particulates.
"The “Europa” system is a multi-application twin walled product designed to convey gases, particles, fumes, smoke and products of combustion from a wide range of engineering combustion and process equipment."
"These components are designed to allow the Europa chimney/vent to [...]."
"Each change in direction of the system shall be by means of an “easy sweep” bend using a combination of Elbows, or Elbows and 135° Tees. A 90° Tee shall only be used where site dimensions do not facilitate an “easy sweep” arrangement."

Note also: "[...] a well-designed system will often use two 45° elbows instead of one 90° elbow (even a sweep 90° elbow) [...]."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piping_and_plumbing_fitting#Sw...

"CHIMNEYS & FLUES"
"ICAL Twin-Wall Pressurised Flue System"
"The installation of the complete system must be strictly in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Each change in direction is by means of an "easy sweep" bend
using a combination of elbows, or elbows and 135 degree tees. A 90 degree tee
is only used where site dimensions do not facilitate an "easy sweep" arrangement."

MEANING

The literal meaning is probably a bend that is easily swept — either by the flow of liquid/gas or by a brush. That might correspond to a combination of elbows and bends, rather than a single bend, as in the quotations above. It might also just indicate a bend with a particularly gentle curve. There is some overlap between those options.

The BS numbers in the source text snippet are indicative of metal pipes, as on an industrial process plant, rather than PVC piping as in drainage systems, or ductwork or chimneys that might be amenable to cleaning with a chimney brush.

Additionally, the source text specifies the flow of "fluids" other than "oil", suggesting the flow of liquids. For which one would not usually imagine inserting a brush into the pipe for cleaning.

Thus, overall the intended meaning in the source text seems to be a bend configured with a gentle turn (or series of turns).
That fits pretty well with the ultimately adopted translation: "Formstücke in leicht gebogener Ausführung".

The OED includes definitions for "sweep" as a verb and as a noun that correspond to senses that are relevant here, namely:
* to push along;
* a long, typically curved, stretch of road/river/...;
* a long (and swift) curving movement.

Of Germanic origin; related to German "schweifen" = to sweep in a curve.
