French term

procédé par procédure

French to English Medical Medical (general) flu assay
Hello everyone,

"Procédé par procédure" seems odd to me, but it seems to be a common term. I'm hoping someone knows the common equivalent in English?

In describing a test for influenza, we have the titles:
Principe
Matériel requis
Procédé par procédure

Then under "Procédé par procédure" we have
Précautions
Conservation
Prélèvement des échantillons
Transport et conservation des échantillons
Procédure

Thank you!

Discussion

Denise Pavao (asker) Dec 24, 2016:
Thanks Sue, and everyone who posted an answer. Anne has gotten me thinking about "method" by itself. That might work here since what it actually says, probably closer to "process per/by procedure" or "method per/by procedure" doesn't work here since there is exactly one procedure that follows. I think the language was borrowed from an assay that has different procedures for different specimen types.
Sue Davis Dec 21, 2016:
ie procedure protocol
Sue Davis Dec 20, 2016:
would protocol work as a translation for procédé? it seems to be referring to a defined set of steps to be followed

Hi blkh! Thank you for your answer. It makes sense, but in this case there is only one procedure described.

Step-by-step instructions

"Procedure" alone could be fine – but will be needed for the following heading, "Procédure".
"Methods" alone (without "for each procedure") might work as well.

Most common in IFU's I have translated so far were headings like "The xxx assay step by step", "Step by step procedure", or similar.
