I am having difficulty understanding the following passage concerning exhibits in a museum. From what I was aware, a "banco dei pegni"is a pawn shop/pawn brokers... and yet from the following description it would seem that it also refers to a piece of furniture ... could this be a display cabinet for displaying goods in a pawn shop? I guess it must be but thanks to anyone who can confirm this.

Nella sala è esposto anche il Banco dei pegni originalmente realizzato per il Monte di Pietà di Cividale. Il mobile si colloca nella tradizione settecentesca nella quale predomina una delicata policroma con decori fantasiosi secondo l’estetismo rococò.

The bank, or pawn shop, if you like was in business from 1494 until 1928 and is really still in business today as part of the Cassa di Risparmio del Friuli Venezia Giulia, so it could very likely have used a rococo banco in the 18th C.

venne assorbito dalla Cassa di Risparmio di Udine (Regio Decreto 12 gennaio 1928, n. 154). Il 1 aprile 1928 lo sportello bancario iniziò a funzionare come filiale dell’istituto udinese."

@ Barbara ... aha... this did cross my mind but given the description detailing the style of the item, it seemed unlikely... unless I misunderstood and the description instead refers to the Rococo tastes of the period generally... If so, I don't see the connection. Thanks!

In my opinion is just the pawning counter, but without seeing it I cannot be sure. It could also be a more complex piece of furniture.

Hi, manducci The snippet refers to the actual piece of furniture orginally found at the Cividale pawn shop. 'Banco' here is to be intended as 'bancone', a 'tipo di mobile destinato a particolari servizî negli uffici e negli esercizî pubblici [...]: consiste in una specie di tavolo alto e lungo chiuso fino a terra dal lato destinato al pubblico, di forme e materiali diversi secondo gli usi cui è adibito, e spesso fornito di cassetti e vetrine' (source, Treccani online).

I can't see any alternative. I believe that following many many mergers, that same bank is now part of the UBI Group which still has a pawn bank in many cities including one under the BPCI brand in viale Certosa in Milan. This piece of furniture is clearly the "bancone" or counter inside the bank, while the first banks in Italy were of course just the "banchi" in the street.
