I was born in Quito, Ecuador, 28 years ago and attended an international school called the Alliance Academy, which was all in English. I moved to the US when I was 18 and attended Simpson College in Redding, CA. I currently live in WA, about 30 miles north of Seattle.
I have been fluent in both English and Spanish all my life, never feeling that I'm less proficient at one over the other. I have an extensive vocabulary in both languages, I enjoy language and perceiving the loss/gain of meaning when translating from language to language has always been thought provoking for me. I have been fascinated by human communication itself, by the concept that by making certain noises and writing symbols along with the order in which they are made we manage to communicate ideas from one person to another.
I have witnessed many times how the meaning is lost or changed during a translation or an interpretation, and realize how important it is to have someone with full command of both languages in charge of interpreting or translating, lest your idea be changed or lost by the time it reaches the recipient's ears. |
