Italiano term

debiti di cancelleria

Da Italiano a Inglese Affari/Finanza Contabilità/Amministrazione
This is part of a footnote from an academic document, describing a series of accounting tricks used to make documents unfathomable - the rest of the phrase is "ad esempio... con i preventivi di spesa assai inferiori alla realtà, con debiti definitivi presentati come debiti di cancelleria, con cifre ingrandite e rimpicciolite a piacimento ecc."

Any help would be much appreciated!

Discussion

James (Jim) Davis Feb 15, 2012:
Normal practice is to replace names with x's and y's. If it is academic then the author won't want his or her name mentioned in relation to the text until after it is published. Showing even half a page of a whole book, won't bother them as long as they remain anonymous.
Anyway, it does look like a passing reference. My suspicion is that the author is thinking in English with this word, but more info on the doc would help. Is it totally generic and academic, or does it relate to a specific industry or even a specific company. If so what does the company do, make stationery? You can see the whole picture, I can only see one tiny square of it.
Ian Mansbridge (asker) Feb 15, 2012:
Hi Jim, thanks for your help. I'm afraid I don't want to copy any more of the text for confidentiality reasons. Also I'm not sure there's anything else that could help, it's really only a passing reference...
James (Jim) Davis Feb 15, 2012:
This doesn't Google at all Ian and I 've never seen it. Cancelleria is either stationery or court, "chancery fees", which don't make a lot of sense here. If I could see the whole picture (just copy and paste), I might be able figure out what this missing piece of the jig-saw is.

debt for office supplies

I don't think we're talking about courts.
debiti di cancelleria = dues for office supplies

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you - in the end even the author wasn't sure (it came from another source). Anyway I think this is the most likely option."

stationery expense

here, a 'similar' context...
