El contexto es el relato de una experincia en la II GM: "Our new Commander found he couldn't stomach the food and got sick, so it was soon decided our plight should be reported to what we called The Fairy Command in Cairo. ('Fairy' was a take-off on the Ferry Command pilots who flew new planes over to the war zones from the US.)

Es un juego de palabras. Fairy es el equivalente de marica para la época y contexto. "Fairy was a take-off": era como nos burlábamos del "Ferry Command". Espero que te sea útil.
