Some years ago, my translation work was quite balanced regarding my four source languages, but I can’t say the same today as almost all my work is from English to Portuguese. So, I’m trying very hard to do a bit of a refresh by watching TV and reading books, newspapers and magazines before any of those three decide to leave my long-term memory.

No but Oct 7, 2022

Every (every) year my mantra is:
Yes, I am going to learn portuguese
Yes, this year, perfect
Yes, that language centre organizes some practical courses, in the evening, and they are also cheap
Yes, I have to learn portuguese

Circular communication

But always open

As a hobbie and obviously for professional purposes. I am learning French and Polish. I already work with three language pairs and adding these two languages in the future will mean more income.

I am trying Oct 7, 2022

But absolutely not for professional purposes.

I reached a point long ago where I decided that concentrating on two languages was plenty for me, especially as I am a generalist subject-wise.

If you are expert on a particular subject field in a handful of languages, that is probably a great way to go, but very few people can cover many languages AND a wide range of subjects at top level.

But I'm trying to learn enough Italian to get by and talk to people beyond standard, polite chit-chat. It seems much harder work than when I was young!

Like Teresa said, it is already hard enough to maintain those that I already know and am not using actively.
I've been familiarising myself with Ukrainian lately since I've been more exposed to it in the past months, but I wouldn't call it learning.

I'm too old for that, and my time is limited.
I once tried to learn a language, but I didn't go all the way, I learned only the basics. It was a nice experience.
What I always do and it's important to me is improving my knowledge in my working languages, including my native language.
I have been exploring and learning various idioms in American English on a translation project I have been working on for about 2 years now.

Russian and German Oct 7, 2022

Not actively, but very slowly. I had spent 3 years on Russian and then, about 15 years ago, I had given up on it. It is one of the native tongues my daughter is acquiring, so I need to brush up. I also want to read in German. Maybe I'll be able to do that when I am old but I believe it's worth it.

Also my Italian sucks. I am at an embarrassingly low level. I am actively learning it.

Aha! Oct 7, 2022

Maalesef, vakit yok.

I'm still working on my English. I've been at it for decades, but I'm making less progress as time goes by.
