The seasons Jul 14, 2021

The seasons don't really have any impact on my workflow. Perhaps with the exception of the Christmas holidays.

My workload is as irregular over the summer as it is during the other seasons, but for the last 4/5 years summer months have been quite good: first of all, I no longer take summer vacations, nowadays I prefer taking a few days between projects every so often during the year. So, occasionally summer brings higher workloads because a lot of translators take holidays during the summer. Then, one of my new customers has an annual meeting in October and a lot of translations are needed in the run-up to these meetings. So far, July has been quite busy and I’m booked in August for a big project. Things look promising, but one swallow doesn’t make a summer…

P.S. By the way, when it’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere it is winter elsewhere…

question "Do you work more in summer?"

Answer: no, because most of my clients are in Italy and in Italy, things tend to go very quiet for the whole summer, i.e. from about mid-July until late September.

In general, my workload tends to drop off slightly in summer. However, some academic clients take advantage of the summer break to get on with articles they've been meaning to publish but haven't had time to work on during the term, so I sometimes get jobs from them which sort of take up the slack.

I usually have more work in the summer compared to some other months of the year as many end clients prepare to launch products onto the market in the autumn

Some of my fields seem to be seasonal (videogames, automotive) but I have not figured out what kind of season they actually have. Sometimes there are huge projects and sometimes there is more of a flow of medium-sized projects, but I see no particular difference in summer. Maybe it is because I am usually available in summer while other translators go on vacation and I fill in for them.

I usually receive a bit less work in summer so that is when I usually take a couple of weeks off (sometimes even longer, or a couple of weeks and then another week a month later). Almost heading off now!

In the last century I used to notice wide seasonal variations in work volume. One European agency I worked for complained every year of a "summer gap" in assignments. The Christmas season was also usually slow with respect to jobs originating in Europe.

This has changed over the years, with unpredictable variations in volume. Despite the pandemic, 2020 was a strong year for me; I experienced a steady flow of assignments throughout the year, and 2021 is likewise looking good, althoug

In the last century I used to notice wide seasonal variations in work volume. One European agency I worked for complained every year of a "summer gap" in assignments. The Christmas season was also usually slow with respect to jobs originating in Europe.

This has changed over the years, with unpredictable variations in volume. Despite the pandemic, 2020 was a strong year for me; I experienced a steady flow of assignments throughout the year, and 2021 is likewise looking good, although my main Europe-based direct client has offered only a few jobs so far this month, unlike the previous month. Agency-related jobs, on the other hand, have remained constant.

Addressing the question at hand: I've never worked more in summer. In past years I've worked a little less, but that has changed for the most part.

What Summer? Jul 14, 2021

No, just the opposite, because Summer here is from December 22 to March 21, covering the end of year festive season and most of the very slow first quarter.

I could if I wanted to Jul 15, 2021

The number of inquiries usually goes up considerably as soon as summer vacations start in certain regions of Germany. I'm already busy enough in normal times so I'm not tempted to work more as a consequence, but over the years I did land a few new clients this way whose usual "go-to" translator was away (sorry).
