Hi everyone! I'm translating a list of descriptions of clothing. Not sure I can picture this, does it mean the ankles are knitted elastic with zips? To UK English. Thanks for your help!

Denise Phelps Feb 24, 2015:
Cuffs vs ankles Interestingly, I've found UK references to "cuffed ankles with zip detailing" (http://www.harrods.com/product/twill-cuffed-jogging-trousers... and "cuffed elasticated ankles with zip opening detail" (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adidas-Mens-Stfrd-Track-Pants/dp/B00...
Charles Davis Feb 22, 2015:
Lindsay said "ankles" I've only just noticed that Lindsay said "the ankles are knitted elastic with zips". So I'd say "ankles" is the word for British English.
Charles Davis Feb 22, 2015:
ankles? Looking at UK sites I find tracksuit bottoms with elasticated ankles.

I wouldn't be surprised if cuffs were used sometimes, but to my British ear it does sound very American. A pity; it's a convenient use of the word.
Candace Holt Ryan Feb 22, 2015:
Correct, I should have said /zip/. As to the word cuff, how does elasticized hem sound? I did find the word /cuff/ in a New Zealand advertisement, though I know that it's not UK. http://www.canterbury.com/cuffed-stadium-pant-navy-p17086
However, I did find this reference from New Zealand to the hem as a /cuff/:http://www.canterbury.com/cuffed-stadium-pant-navy-p17086
Charles Davis Feb 22, 2015:
Cuffs Unfortunately this won't do in British English either. Only sleeves have cuffs, not legs. If they're folded over they're called turn-ups, but otherwise bottoms, I suppose.
Noni Gilbert Riley Feb 22, 2015:
Lindsay has asked for British English So zip, not zipper, otherwise agree with DrRyan.

Here in USA these are very popular right now.
