Spanish term

circulo de apoyo (in this context)

Spanish to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. Caring for the elderly
This is the context: "el apoyo que requiere la gente mayor no lo constituye el solo uso de artefactos que facilitan su vida cotidiana, sino que lo que consideran vital es la comunicación social y es lo que más aprecian de lo que les proporciona su círculo de apoyo" Would that be "those around them," "their carers" or does anyone have any suggestions please?

Discussion

Eileen Brophy (asker) Mar 28, 2010:
Thank you everyone, for me, I would like to chose more than one but the system doesn´t permit it :-0(( Thank you for all of your help.
Jenni Lukac (X) Mar 28, 2010:
Hi Eileen. It would depend upon the scope of your text, but it is usually considered a network (both informal and institutional) that goes beyond care providers and family. It could be the mail carrier, the delivery boy, neighbours, etc.
Eileen Brophy (asker) Mar 28, 2010:
Perhaps carers Jenni?

circle of support

This phrase is also used in the context of caring for the elderly.
Example sentence:

We provide compassionate and loving care and support to persons with life-limiting illnesses and to their circle of support.

If you are part of the final inner circle of support, the person needs your affirmation, support, and permission.

support group

This is very common phrase in many types of groups: convalescent, retiree, youth, women, etc. Their members are there to support and motivate each other.
Example sentence:

Mary is delighted to be part of a support group where each individual contributes to the well being of every member regardless of their economic background.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Joseph Tein : I think this is close, but to me a 'support group' is a group of people who have regular meetings in a regular place to deal with a specific issue or topic. Support 'system' or 'network' is broader.

support system

Standard nomenclature in psychology.
Peer comment(s):

agree Joseph Tein : Ciao femme. I like 'support system' (or network) ... it's wider than a 'support group'

Grazie, Joseph. "Support group" would imply that there is some kind of therapy going on, which I don't think is the case here.
agree Muriel Vasconcellos : This is what it's typically called in everyday parlance. (I see now that you said it's also used in psychology.) Yes, it's very standard!
