A very similar phrase is in the KudoZ glossaries but the asker never awarded points, so I'd like to get some other opinions.

Patricia Rosas (asker) Oct 30, 2009:
The English abstract says: This article analyzes the process of regional economic growth in U.S. and Mexican border states
from 1975 to 2000. Beta- and sigma-convergence analyses did not reveal any econometric or
statistical evidence that a systematic reduction in existing disparities between these economies is
occurring. However, there is also no evidence that the disparities are increasing. The data indicate
that regional growth has not been uniform,...

So, I think it is (as Liz suggestions) testing the convergence hypothesis not contrasting or comparing it anything else. This is part of my doubt, and I was thinking of using "verifying" but the results didn't verify it... HTH
philgoddard Oct 30, 2009:
I don't think it's relevant that the asker didn't award points - we've had this one before, and there were plenty of satisfactory answers. My only question is what is the hypothesis being compared to?

I understand your doubts about using "contrast"....I was unable to find this with "hypothesis" too...FWIW

Yes, having a nice Sunday here as it is relatively relaxed, with all my family here:) Just about to sign off...don't work too hard!
Note from asker:
Liz: Thanks for your help! I just now saw your request and I've posted the url above in the discussion. Hope you are looking forward to a nice weekend!
fwiw: I just added a note on coolbrowne's answer supporting the points you made.
No, I had no quibble with what you said or how you said it. Spelling matters, and you can't change the meaning at will either!

empircal conparison of (convergence) hypotheses

The text show the use of two tests, whence compariso ("contrastación"):

Typo (thanks to liz askew): It's comparison, not conparison. However hypotheses is correct. I intended it to be plural (the originnal should be as well)
Note from asker:
cool: I appreciate your attempt, and I don't want to bum you out, but Liz is absolutely right (empircal should be empirical). The two tests are exercises (methodologies for testing the convergence hypothesis). So, it must be hypothesis in the singular.
Peer comment(s):

disagree liz askew : two spelling errors, and hypothesis should be in the singular./EmpIrical, ComparIson, and hypothesIs. I would not dare to re-write the original.//So, two spelling errors and one mis-translation.

Thank you. But it's just one. ;-)
