General
Even though it's not my pair, I am currently translating a power point file for a friend who is leaving this saturday to Canada 'cos he's taking part in a social sciences congress that will take place there.
Then, my question is... which term do you use in english to refer to clientelismo? I couldn't find it in any of my dictionaries (I am thinking I should get a specialised one). The sentence goes like this:
Estamos en presencia de una redefinición de los mecanismos de coordinación de la acción en el marco de una dialéctica entre clientelismo y representación social y política.
Thanks!

a client- oriented system/consumer-oriented system
If you are referring to the consumerism rampant in society, which is at odds with social or political participation.

: No, se refiere a otra cosa, a un sistema (de hecho, bastante común) de poder político.

: It's more to do with voting choices than with consumerism. "clientelism" is better.

Discussion
That's what I've found around here.
So I think I'll stick with clientelism, even though it may not be found in certain dictionaries, since as I saw on this question, someone posted something about an article written by a US author who has a PhD on this subject, which title had had the word clientelism in it.
btw, patronage is not the same as clientelismo, patronage is actually paternalismo, which is a different political practice. Clientelismo refers to a practice where the polititian does certain favours or gives money or objects to the people in order to get their votes. This way, they become their 'clients', and there is an exchange (money/stuff/favours for votes and support).
Patronage and paternalism are something different (check it on the dictionary, there is a subtle difference between all three of these terms)
cro·ny·ism
Function: noun
: partiality to cronies especially as evidenced in the appointment of political hangers-on to office without regard to their qualifications.
