Lightning
I am translating a text that explains the difference between
" relámpago": electrical discharge between two clouds caused by a difference in charge between them.
and
"rayo": a general term to refer to lightning which includes bolts of lightening, the electrical discharge between two clouds (i.e. "relámpago") and the electrical discharge between a cloud and the land (which, according to this text is not a "relámpago").
Is there a scientific term for "relámpago" that I can use to differentiate it from the general term "lightening"?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Así se le llama... hay veces que se vé a lo lejos pero por eso ya no se oye.

: This makes no sense whatsoever. Especially when accompanied by a comment to the effect that thunder is sometimes "seen in the distance" ¿?// Pls. provide a reference stating that "thunder" could possibly be a translation of "relámpago"
