I think that we need new and refreshing English translations for "a la vanguardia" - the old ones have become pretty worn out. I might also suggest: trend-setter or perhaps pace-setter; maybe even "front runner". The term itself suggests a state of being beyond custom, tradition, or the usual. Thus, an "innovative" translation would be more than justified.
