coking

I am not sure, but I think this might be "coking" where oil is burned off and leaves behind a layer of carbon, again I'm not 100%.

coking phenomenon

“Introducing high thermal stability engine oil in KLM’s fleet significantly improved oil system reliability by reduction of the coking phenomenon we were faced with in the current generation of high thrust turbofan engine applications”

“A STUDY REPORT ON COKING OF KEROSENE

To understand the coking phenomenon, we must have the knowledge of the major components of the kerosene before heating as well as during the course of heating at different temperatures. The study of the intermediates can help us to understand the precursors and mechanisms of coke formation.”

“PATENTSTORM

However, in the presence of CO2(diesel fuel : CO2 of 10:1 volumetric flow rates), the coking phenomenon was avoided. Thermolysis reactions are negligible below 475° C. but the thermal decomposition of some fuel components became significant at 500° C.”
