From a sociology paper:
Distribuzione per giorno della settimana e tipo di gruppo, dei soggetti che svolgono o non svolgono una attività lavorativa
Is simply "work" sufficient or is there a more academic-sounding alternative?

Gainful employment
impiego remunerato is the idea here.

job
An alternative to Tom's, but which perhaps fits into the sentence better:
"Who have or do not have a job during the week". Anyway, I have always used this translation since "jobless" came into use as an alternative to "unemployed".
