Italian term

Argini dormienti

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Environment & Ecology River restoration
Extracted from the proceeding of a workshop.

CONTEXT:

I was thinking about "sleeper embankments", but I'm not sure about it.

dormant levees/embankments

I don't see any problem translating literally here, as 'dormienti' is subsequently explained ('ovvero non visibili').

sleeper embankment

There are lots of Ghits for sleeper embankments to do with railways. Isn't it the same principle for rivers? I didn't find any hits for the other suggestions. I could only find a pic of a Horby model! See what you think..
