Italian term

Capitani Reggenti le HELL Paolo

Italian to English Law/Patents Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs power of attorney
it's the HELL bit I can't find. It is followed by the two names of the Captains Regent, so I think it is a title, but what?

Discussion

Isabel Booth (asker) Feb 1, 2006:
Thanks to you all - How can I give points to each of you?
Isabel Booth (asker) Feb 1, 2006:
Thanks Angela! The full sentence is: Essendo Capitani Reggenti le HELL Paolo Bollini e Marino Riccardi (public figures so I hope they'll not mind their names being included!).It's at the top of the introduction to a power of attorney (BTW, I'm from Yorkshire, I only went to UNI at Newky)
Angela Arnone Feb 1, 2006:
Now gan canny pet ... if it's a title, it may not be Italian ... what words start with H in Italian? And hotel doesn't count - that's French. Could be Latin? Don't you have a whole sentence? Could it be a typo? And "le"????
Isabel Booth (asker) Feb 1, 2006:
Thanks Francesca, I know that bit, it's the HELL that I don't know. (Although this translation is making me feel hellish myself)
Francesca Callegari Feb 1, 2006:
In San Marino, an independent republic surrounded within Italy, the 'Captains Regent', or Capitani Reggenti, are two officials elected as joint heads of state.

Their Eccellencies

It might be an abbreviation of the plural form of "His Excellency" - "Loro Eccellenze" or, in this case "Eccellenze Loro", with a typo (should have been EELL).

Or, it might just be possible that in a very archaical style it used to be written with an H - "Heccellenze Loro" (say, in the XVII century) - but here I'm really guessing
Check:
"I Capitani Reggenti hanno diritto al titolo di "eccellenza".

in: http://www.interni.segreteria.sm/index.php?id=203

Repeating a letter for the plural is rather common in Italian acronyms (cfr. p. for page, pp. for pages, for instance)

for a use of EELL for "eccellenze loro" see:

LA GUERRA CIVILE SPAGNOLA E L'INCRINATURA DEL CONSENSO AL FASCISMO ...
EELL [Eccellenze Loro] vorranno all'uopo predisporre speciali servizi et ricorrere

Exellencies, of course (I was sure I had corrected my typo...)

after seing your next question, I'm sure it's no typo, but a heady mix of (Church) Latin, Spanish and Italian: it might even have been "Hexcelentiae" - or any other fancy spelling you like!
Note from asker:
Thanks Alfredo, the light has come on with your idea of EELL, it MUST be this!!
