Grazie Rachel!
agree philgoddard : This is clearly the right answer, though I'm still not sure what it means. Is it a cluster of objects?

Thanks! It's quite difficult to find a clear definition. What I've found so far is that most extended objects have an irregular shape. Some examples are galaxies, nebulae, planetary nebulae, comets, galactic nebulae and globular clusters.

remote objects

This would be one way of describing this.

You could possibly also use "distant" objects.
Example sentence:

"This instrument helps people observe remote objects by collecting electromagnetic radiation (such as visible light)."

"Telescopes are delicate instruments used to observe remote objects in outer space, such as moons and planets. "
