English term

Butt vs. Hogshead

English to Spanish Bus/Financial Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
"A Hogshead holds 250 liters, while a BUTT is twice that size with 500 liters."

I refer to casks used to export sherry wine to the US.

Thank you so much :-)
Taña Dalglish May 30, 2016:
More... BOTA DE RECIBO: standard-sized butt (31 arrobas
or about 507 litres) used locally for measuring and
receiving wine.
BOTA GORDA: bodega butt containing 36 to 40
arrobas (600 to 665 litres).
BOTA PUNTA: the bottom cask at the end of a row,
slightly more exposed to the flow of air and often used
for sampling but the wine in one tends to develop
slightly differently from the rest.

MEDIA (BOTA): a hogshead (half a butt).

HOGSHEAD: a cask holding 54 gallons

@ Lorena Post it as an answer, and I'll support you (see: http://www.infideas.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/978190965...

BOTA BODEGUERA: a large butt with a capacity of
34 arrobas used for maturing wine in a bodega. Also
an old butt which, through age, has lost its shape and
whose contents are doubtful.
BOTA CHICA: a shipping butt containing 30 arrobas
or about 500 litres.
BOTA DE EMBARQUE: shipping butt: another
name for bota chica.
BOTA DE EXTRACCIÓN: another term for a bota
chica.

what I am going to share here is based on my knowledge as a wine specialist with a certificate from the Master Sommelier Society but you will have to do some research to see if I am remembering this correctly or not: When it comes to Jerez the barrels or casks are actually called botas. A 500 liter (or 30 arrobas) cask is just a "bota" and a 250 liter one is a "media bota". The terms butt and hogshead are used both in Sherry production and malt whisky, the casks used for the ageing of whisky have, almost always, been used for the ageing of Jerez first and as a general rule they are made of American oak. Normally sherry is exported in botas (meaning 500 liter-barrels) only and they are called botas de exportación. Hope this helps :-)

butt vs. hogshead

Son los nombres propios que les dieron a ciertas toneles/barriles por su tamaño. Si los quieres traducir podrían ser: bota/trompa/pata para "butt"y cabeza de marrano/cochino para "hogshead".
Peer comment(s):
