seguir trayectorias, recorrer (superficies, curvas) y investigar
tracking = for a measuring in coordinates device would mean following a certain trajectory or level curve and getting coordinates of different points/rebuilding curves in a certain plane
scanning = in the same context, getting coordinates of points on a surface with the purpose of, say, introducing them in a computer, interpolating and obtaining the mathematical description of that surface. This is possible also for a curve.
probing = in the same context, to investigate with or without touching the surface (infrared beam).
I've seen a machine like that, not very modern, but it was wired to a computer and performed the actions above.
