The ATMs are connected to the transaction processing system via encrypted VPN tunnel over standard internet connection. Most of the connections use ADSL technology, but mobile connections and bank office networks are also used. The data transmission protocols are based on ISO 8583 standard with bank specific extensions and Diebold DDC 91x protocol.
