Dutch term

wezenlijk contact

Dutch to English Social Sciences Philosophy Steiner education/philosophy
'Mijn onderzoek draait om thema’s als bewustwording van specifieke fenomenen zoals emotionele impact op elkaar, autismespectrum stoornissen, intermenselijke communicatie, emotionele en sociale wederkerigheid, het IK als besturingsinstrument van de mens en wezenlijk contact.'

Now I think I know what she means, just can't think of a clever way of putting it in English. And suggestions would be welcome. The text is a university paper on Steiner education/philosophy about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and how they relate to primary education stuff.

Discussion

taalbert Apr 25, 2013:
I would choose "essential" for wezenlijk. It says something about the contact and that is what 'wezenlijk' does in the dutch. 'Wezenlijk' en 'essentieel' in dutch have similar meaning.
I wish you luck, Steiner is difficult in translating what he means to say.

Check out links for vital contact & waldorf education.
Michael Beijer (asker) Apr 23, 2013:
~ although I'm not happy with it for various reasons, so far I was thinking of using something like 'essential contact'

I think 'wezenlijk' here is about essences (about being). here are some related synonyms: actual, real, substantial, vital

vital contact

"Buildings, libraries and apparatus are good

students with a vigorous and stimulating mind and
heart - this is the sine qua non of a successful
education...

Alternatively, you could use "real contact" but I think vital will do.

I see that everyone is agreeing with "fundamental human contact". I would like to point out that Rudolf Steiner's (or Waldorf) philosophy is particular, as is its terminology. There are no refs to be found for "fundamental human contact" in this context.

Here a few more refs:
His work is pervaded with a sense of vital contact with other mysterious worlds, some of them hellish.

Philosophy, i.e., the idealistic conception of the world,
is, thus, in Volynsky's opinion, indispensable for the real
artist. Moreover, the poet and the philosopher do prac-
tically the same thing, — they reveal the truth, though
their methods differ. " Both feel and grasp the truth
directly, through the momentary vital contact of an elated
soul with the world, notwithstanding a host of logical
failures, illusions of our senses and predilections of every-
day life."

Existence is economic, but life is not; that radical and vital contact has to be renewed.

Or possibly, if that helps, you could say "vital human contact", depending on the flow of the text.

It also applies in wider context:
Another vital human contact element revolves around the first
words we use, especially on the telephone.

Children deprived of vital human contact fail to make crucial distinctions among emotions; their senses of what others feel remains fuzzy.

Nog een opmerking: het is niet eens 100% zeker of wel alleen "menselijk" contact wordt bedoeld. Het kan m.i. om wezenlijk contact met de wereld om je heen zijn, inclusief mensen.

Note from asker:
Thanks Lianne, as things stand, I am using 'vital human contact' in my text!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks everyone! I think that the rather nebulous concept 'wezenlijk contact' can be translated in many different ways. 'Fundamental human contact' seems to be one possibility, but there are many others, such as 'real contact', 'substantial contact', 'actual contact', or even 'radical contact', 'positive contact' or 'material contact'. However, 'vital contact' gets more hits in Steiner/Waldorf related literature and so I am going to go with this option in my text."

fundamental human contact

wezenlijk means not only essential, but also 'eigen aan het wezen van iemand of iets', so essentially, the author of this piece is not only saying it is fundamental, human-to-human contact, but also that it is man's own way of interacting with each other.

Or that is how I would understand it.
