Context package leaflet for an anti-cancer drug.

Does it make sense to say that bone marrow depression (or suppression) is decreased blood cell formation in the bone marrow? I wonder if this is the right term.

Thanks very much in advance!

bone marrow suppression or bone marrow depression

Bone marrow suppression occurs as the result of chemotherapy or alternatively in immunocompromised patients where it is not necessarily a consequence of any medication. My experience is that the term suppression (in preference to depression) is more commonly used here in the UK in scientific writings within the oncological community, i.e. between and among doctors, and that the term bone marrow depression tends to be encountered in publications by researchers from non English-speaking countries or in literature directed at patients. I stress that this is an impression only, because I have not done any formal study on the prevalence of the one term as opposed to the other. It is based on what my antennae are telling me about how they are used. I would say that you can safely use these terms interchangeably but if I were translating your package leaflet, assuming it is directed at patients, I would do what you have done in the question: bone marrow depression (suppression). Including the second term in brackets would enable patients to research the condition under both terms.

bone marrow depression

IMO the bone marrow function is depressed.
A suppression would imply a medical intervention IMO.
