Dutch term

VRC

Dutch to English Other Geography
I can't work out what this stands for, though I'm sure it's dead obvious :-( DRC = Democratic Republic of Congo obviously (Kongo = name of a people). The only likely candidate seems to be the country to the west of the DRC, confusingly called Congo or Republic of the Congo" on some maps. Anyone know what VRC stands for and what it's official name is in English?

Discussion

MoiraB (asker) Feb 9, 2006:
Sorry, was too busy showing off my new-found knowledge about VRC that I forgot to thank everyone! Much appreciated.

People's Republic of Congo, 1970 - 1992

The People's Republic constitution new flag on the 30th December 1969. That flag was more Soviet-inspired but still used the same three colours. The hammer and hoe were a variation of the hammer and sickle, and the yellow star represented the leading role of the one legal party. The red was also representing the blood shed by the anticolonialist fighters. Following the end of the one party regime, a new constitution went in force on the 10th June 1991. The original flag was restored.
Dov Gutterman, 11 January 1999

The adoption date is 30th December 1969, like the constitution. The flag, the constitution and the "People's Republic" name went in force 1st January 1970.
The red flag is the mere copy of the PCT (Parti Congolais du travail - Labour Congolese Party) one.
Jean-Francois Blanc, 1 December 1999

Following independence as the Congo Republic on August 15, 1960, Fulbert Youlou ruled as the country's first president until labor elements and rival political parties instigated a 3-day uprising that ousted him. The Congolese military took charge of the country briefly and installed a civilian provisional government headed by Alphonse Massamba-Débat. Under the 1963 constitution, Massamba-Débat was elected President for a 5-year term but it was ended abruptly with an August 1968 coup d'état. Capt. Marien Ngouabi, who had participated in the coup, assumed the presidency on December 31, 1968. One year later, President Ngouabi proclaimed Congo to be Africa's first **"people's republic"** and announced the decision of the National Revolutionary Movement to change its name to the Congolese Labor Party (PCT). On March 16, 1977, President Ngouabi was assassinated. An 11-member Military Committee of the Party (CMP) was named to head an interim government with Col. (later Gen.) Joachim Yhombi-Opango to serve as President of the Republic.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "No need to drag this one out for 24 hours! Knew it would be obvious, but I’m afraid you’re out of date with the EN name, as Harry and Kate point out. Apparently it reverted back to Republic of Congo in 1992 (dates in your links only go up to then). See http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=Democratic%20Republic%20of%20the%20Congo for a jokey account of the naming chaos. Also known informally as Congo-Brazzaville (cf. DRC also known as Congo-Kinshasa). And Hirselina – thought it was obvious it’s Africa we’re talking about ;-)"
