In Netherlands Dutch I tought it meant someting like:
Throw in the towel, give up, never say die.

No more will we stand idly by while the president hides from the 9/11 commission.
No more will we stand idly by while the administration manipulates intelligence, like the Niger uranium fraud, or worse yet, uses manufactured intelligence from discredited sources to circumvent the necessary channels of government, forcing lies instead of facts to become the basis on which policy decisions are made.
No more will we stand idly by while the administration blatantly lies about the reasons it went to war with Iraq, or about the costs of the occupation.
No more will we stand idly by while the Bush campaign lies about John Kerry\'s record on defense and national security.

Comment: "Thanks to all for their interesting contributions. I like this one best in the context, also because it is neutral and leaves all the other options open.
Thanks Jarry."

to become disharted and let things slide
Ik ben het eens met Roelens, die het eigenlijk al gezegd heeft, maar voor mijn gevoel verschilt dat wat hij zegt en wat Jarry zegt, vrij veel.
stand idly by = werkloos toezien (dat iets [negatiefs] gebeurt)
„We cannot stand idly by (= do nothing) while these people suffer”
The global AIDS crisis demands that we no longer stand idly by as
our neighbors worldwide needlessly suffer and, too often, die. ...

Strictly speaking, the phrase should be translated by one of the following expressions : "to lower one's arms/to give up/to lose heart/to become discouraged or disheartened" but there are quite a few synonym expression that might better fit your context, such as "chuck up the sponge/drop by the wayside/drop out/fall by the wayside/throw in the towel".
See : http://www.webster-dictionary.org/definition/give up for more information on these expressions.
