Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Mar 20, 2005:
If it is "mortising machine", what about "gatensteek"?(my previous question)(http://www.proz.com/kudoz/975830?float=1) - my dictionary says "mortiser" and "mortising machine" is the same thing, and in the above list they are obviously different
Non-ProZ.com Mar 20, 2005:
Ouch, the above listing of machines was in two columns in the original text.
Non-ProZ.com Mar 20, 2005:
It's definitely a complete tool/device. Here's some more context:
Omschrijving: De machinaal houtbewerker is werkzaam in de machinale afdeling van een timmerbedrijf.

Werkzaamheden: - het instellen van:
afkortzaag freesmachines
cirkelzaag gatensteek
vlakbank langgatboor
vandiktebank
- het aan- en afvoeren van grondstoffen en halffabrikaten
Fred ten Berge Mar 20, 2005:
Could you specify from the context whether just a 'bit' or a more complete tool is concerned?

mortising tool / machine

Assuming this question concerns a tool rather than just an (essential) part (a bit), there are several reliable options.
Kluwer Groot Polytechnisch Woordenboek moreover mentions (relevant to wood):
'trepanning' and 'gin drilling'.

As far as I remember from technical colleagues, I'd recommend to opt for 'mortising'.
Even if just the 'bit' is relevant,(<--mortising bit).

After your additional info, the only remaining advice can be: \"mortising machine\".
Peer comment(s):

agree Johan Venter : Mortising machine. Google "langgatboor" and "mortising machine" under images and similar results are given. Mortising tool, however, does not deliver satisfactory results.

Also considering asker's further explanation (this concerns a device!) there's no doubt that "mortising machine " is by far the best solution! Thanks a lot for your Googling investigation!

router bit

Kluwer Bouwkunde:
langgatboor = router bit
Peer comment(s):

neutral Fred ten Berge : Lots of doubt, since 'bit', as you know, refers to the last couple of centimetres - so to speak - of the drilling machine/apparatus/tool. A router, as confirmed by Kluwer etc., refers, in respect of woodworking, to 'bovenfrees'. Different from langboren!
