agree Iris Shalev : After Wilhelmina's explanation, I see that this makes much more sense... (and I was only joking with my previous comment! No offense meant)

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "There has been some misunderstanding about the meaning of the term "verdeeldheid" in the context of the sentence, it did not refer to some sort of conflict (this would have been easy) but to geographical "verdeeldheid". You (accidentially) came up with the right answer by quoting the bible, it is dispersion! "

discord

I would call it discord among the people, or a difference in opinion between the gypsies and the Jews.
Note from asker:
There has been some misunderstanding about the meaning of the term "verdeeldheid" in the context of the sentence, it did not refer to some sort of conflict (this would have been easy) but to geographical "verdeeldheid". Barend (accidentially) came up with the right answer by quoting the bible, it is dispersion! And so, even though you came up with better terms, I had to award the points to him. As to the comments about the collective karma of jew and gypsies, I want to clarify that the collective karma of these 2 people is quite positive: (ignoring the fact that the concept of karma does not encourage viewing it as either as positive or negative, this is an emotional perspective, karma is merely spiritual schooling) the karma of being dispersed of the jews and gypsies actually has to do with a connective task: part of their karma is to connect different cultures. I wanted to clarify this to not give the impression that esoterism promotes prejudice views as is sometimes thought. Finally, I want to thank you for your participation in this question.

Thank you Ron
agree Iris Shalev : I do hope that this is not really our karma... :)

Thank you Iris, yes, I do hope so too. Enjoy your Sunday. :-)
neutral Barend van Zadelhoff : It is not about division among jews and gypsies, but about division among themselves, internal division or strife (my choice). This is dealing with the Diaspora; "thou shalt be a dispersion in all kingdoms of the earth"

discord/dissension/division

All three are suggested by Van Dale and any will do in the context.

I make no comment as to any discord/dissension/division amongst Gypsies or Jews except to say that both groups have been subject to more hateful prejudice than any others - and that is fact, not opinion.

neutral Barend van Zadelhoff : division best option, I think: United we stand, divided we fall. This is dealing with the Diaspora. Read the Hebrew Bible for the underlying "causes" of the Diaspora // All I try to say is that the translation needs to be made with the Diaspora in mind.

Ref the Hebrew Bible, I invite you to read my profile at http://www.proz.com/profile/924884
