Trenching is a technique to encourage new feeder roots, the tiny hair-like roots that absorb moisture and nutrients from the soil, on a tree or shrub that is to be transplanted. These roots occur at the end of the root and can easily be cut off or damaged when transplanting, increasing replant shock for the plant.
A trench, one spade width wide and 45-60cm deep, or more depending on the size of the tree or shrub, is dug around the plant at the drip-line. The trench is back-filled with a firable mixture of soil, compost and sand.
In winter when the plant is dormant, it can be transplanted, taking with it a new set of feeder roots and minimizing replant shock.

: maar *geregeld*? Does anyone repeatedly burlap the root balls of trees as part of a cultivation programme?\\OK, but the refs I see for 'balling' relate to uprooting or relocating trees (and wouldn't that be covered by 'verplant'?)

Just to clarify: I'm not suggesting that 'burlapping' should be included in the translation, only the 'balling' bit :-)

Root pruning involves severing the roots of a tree, all the way around the tree's circumference at the drip line. This can be done by slicing down with a sharp spade. Ideally, root pruning should take place a year prior to digging and transplanting the tree. However in a pinch, 2-3 months should allow enough time for the tree to overcome the stress of root pruning and to start the process of developing new feeder roots.
Wortels groeien alle kanten op. Ruim voordat debomen gerooid worden, moet je de bomen daarom rondsteken. Rondsteken houdt in dat je met een spa in eencirkel rond de stam in de grond steekt. Je steekt de spa in de grond en haalt hem er vervolgens op dezelfdemanier weer uit. Op die manier steek je de wortels door, zodat ze zich gaan vertakken.
