Dutch term
wens ik mede de "meest" Olympisch gemotiveerde kandidaten te weerhouden
Dutch to English
Marketing
Advertising / Public Relations
I don't have much context for this. I think it's the introduction to a brochure about a triathlon championship sponsored by a company. This is a member of the Belgian Olympic committee talking. He describes his career and how he came to be on the committee, and then, in the final paragraph, he says:
Vanuit het BOIC [ie the committee], en dankzij het mooi partnership met XXX [name of company], wens ik mede de “meest” Olympisch gemotiveerde kandidaten te weerhouden.
I have absolutely no idea what the whole phrase after the comma means, or how to translate "weerhouden".

Dutch term (edited):
weerhouden
Selected
selecteren
to select, to keep
Van Dale:
weer·hou·den
zie ook: weerhouden van
overgankelijk werkwoord; weerhield, heeft
weerhouden; afleiding(en): weerhouding
(in België, niet algemeen) (personen of
zaken uit een verzameling) selecteren,
behouden, overhouden
If you google for [BOIC weerhouden] you will find a lot of examples that use 'weerhouden'.
This must be a spoken sentence and it is Flemish. I think he means to say: Because I am a member of BOIC, and because we have great support from XXX, I am (also, i.e. just like them) looking forward to selecting the most motivated Olympic candidates.
"wens ik mede" could also mean "on behalf of" instead of "also/as well", but to understand that better you need the previous sentence(s).
In that case the sentence would rather say: On behalf of the BOIC, and the great partnership with XXX, I look forward to selecting the most motivated Olympic candidates.
Good luck.

I must admit I didn't know either, Phil. The odd sentence challenged me (but for me it's a distraction ;-)

It should have been 'select' btw, not 'selecteren' :-)

Note from asker:
Thanks very much Lianne. I must admit I didn't realise "select" was one of the meanings of weerhouden. It makes a lot more sense now. |

: weerhouden is in every Nl-En dictionary. fyi, the language is Dutch, the people in Belgium who speak it are Flemish. Lots of Dutch spoken in both Dutch-speaking countries can be highly 'distracting'.......

From the BIOC (Belgisch Olympisch en Interfederaal Comité) [Belgium], and thanks to a nice partnership with Coca Cola, I wish also that the "most" motivated Olympic candidates to stop drink Pepsi...
Example sentence:
We...hebben u weerhouden als topkandidaat voor deze baan, en bieden u daarom een ...
Ondergetekende is van oordeel dat de "weerhouden" waarderingsmethodes bedrijfseconomisch passend zijn
Note from asker:
Thanks, but xxx does not stand for Coca-Cola so this is not the correct answer. |

I've put this meaning of "weerhouden" in the glossary as it's not there.
