Tras la firma del Pacto de Milán, ciudades como Valencia o Vitoria-Gasteiz, entre otras, ya están avanzando en su propia estrategia agroalimentaria local.
Jueves, 15 de junio de 2017.- Las agricultoras y agricultores familiares juegan un papel fundamental en el abastecimiento de alimentos a las ciudades y los territorios colindantes. Siendo en las ciudades donde reside la mitad de la población mundial, es evidente su papel clave en el desarrollo de sistemas agroalimentarios locales. La articulación de las relaciones entre el campo y la ciudad es uno de los principales retos para garantizar la alimentación de la humanidad en el futuro y mejorar el acceso a los mercados para los agricultores y agricultoras familiares.
A este respecto, cabe destacar la firma del Pacto de Política Alimentaria Urbana de Milán, (MUFPP) o, abreviado, Pacto de Milán. Se trata del primer protocolo internacional que anima a las ciudades a desarrollar sistemas alimentarios sostenibles que garanticen alimentos saludables y accesibles a toda su población, proteger la biodiversidad y reducir el desperdicio de alimentos. Hasta el momento, y desde octubre de 2015, el Pacto ya ha sido firmado por más de 140 ciudades de todo el mundo.
Cabe destacar, que el Decenio de la Agricultura Familiar también buscará el apoyo y la implicación de las administraciones locales para el impulso, y sobre todo asegurar la implementación, de políticas públicas en favor de la Agricultura Familiar en el nivel local.
VALENCIA Y VITORIA-GASTEIZ, DOS EJEMPLOS DE COMPROMISO CON LA AGRICULTURA FAMILIAR
Valencia y Vitoria-Gasteiz son solo dos ejemplos del trabajo que desde lo local se está haciendo para impulsar la Agricultura Familiar de la localidad y su entorno. Otras ciudades como Vancouver, Riga o Quito, entre otros, también han apostado por trabajar estrategias agroalimentarias locales.
El pasado octubre 2016, la ciudad de Valencia fue elegida Capital mundial de la Alimentación Sostenible 2017. La ciudad de Vitoria-Gasteiz también está trabajando en una Estrategia Agroalimentaria Sostenible, coordinada por el gobierno local e impulsada por la propia ciudadanía, con el objetivo de conectar el consumo de la población con la producción local de alimentos de calidad. Esto supondrá incentivar la producción agroganadera del municipio e impulsar el sector primario, además de mejorar la calidad alimentaria de la población.

Since the Milan Pact was signed, many cities such as Valencia and Vitoria-Gasteiz have already been making progress with their own local agri-food strategies.

Family farmers play a fundamental role in providing food to cities and their neighbouring territories. Given that cities host half the world’s population, it is clear they have a strategic role to play in the development of local agri-food systems. Managing the relationship between country and city is one of the major challenges in guaranteeing mankind’s future ability to feed itself and in improving access to markets for family farmers.
On this point, attention should be drawn to the signing of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP) or Milan Pact, in short. This is the first international protocol to call for cities to develop sustainable food systems guaranteeing healthy and accessible food to all, protect biodiversity and reduce food waste. To date, the Pact has been signed by more than 140 cities worldwide since October 2015.
It is important to note that the Decade of Family Farming also seeks the support and involvement of local governments in this initiative and, in particular, aims to ensure public policies supporting family farming are implemented at a local level.
VALENCIA AND VITORIA-GASTEIZ – TWO EXAMPLES OF COMMITMENT TO FAMILY FARMING
The Spanish cities of Valencia and Vitoria-Gasteiz are only two examples of the work being undertaken at a local level to promote family farming within the cities and their surroundings. Vancouver, Riga or Quito, to name a few, are among the cities which have committed to developing local agri-food strategies.
In October 2016, the city of Valencia was elected World Sustainable Food Capital 2017. The city of Vitoria-Gasteiz is also developing a Sustainable Agri-food Strategy, coordinated by the local government and led by citizens themselves with the aim of connecting local, quality food production with its consumption in the city. This will involve incentivising farming in the municipality and promoting the primary sector as well as improving food quality for the population.

Source text - Spanish La temperatura en verano puede llegar a los 50 grados a la sombra y en invierno, el frío es tan duro que puede llegar a congelar cualquier cosa. Donde mires hay arena y el desierto es infinito.
El pueblo saharaui encontró refugio en el área de Hamada de Tindouf, una de las regiones más inhóspitas del planeta, al oeste de Argelia, en la frontera de Marruecos, Mauritania y Sahara Occidental.
Cerca de 200.000 personas viven en los 4 campamentos o wilayas, llamados Smara, Ausserd, Dajla y El Aaiún.
Entre ellos existen entre unos 20 o 60 kilómetros de distancia, menos Dajla que dista unos 200 kilómetros.
Cada wilaya se divide en pequeños grupos de población llamados dahiras.
A su vez cada dahira se divide en 4 barrios.
Las dahiras y las wilayas reciben el nombre de los municipios de los territorios ocupados.
Dentro de los campamentos de refugiados saharauis se ha organizado un estado en el exilio.
La mayoría de la población vive en tiendas de campañas o jaimas o en construcciones de adobe numeradas, sin servicios de agua potable y con total falta de medios de subsistencia.
Han designado a un responsable en cada barrio y grupo de tiendas, para que respondan y organizan la vida en la comunidad.
La capital administrativa es Rabouni donde se encuentran los servicios de protocolo, presidencia, ministerios y otras administraciones.
Todos los adultos que viven en los campamentos tienen la obligación de formar parte de algún comité.
Existen 5 comités: de Salud, de Educación, de Suministros, de Desarrollo Económico y de Justicia y Asuntos Sociales.
La organización y los comités están a cargo de las mujeres de las dahiras, porque todos los hombres deben estar en el ejército o estudiando.
Translation - English The temperature in summer can reach 50 degrees in the shade and in winter, it is so cold that everything becomes frozen.
There is sand as far as the eye can see in the infinite desert.
The Sahrawi people took refuge in the area of Hamada de Tindouf, one of the most inhospitable regions on the planet. Situated in the west of Algeria, it borders Morocco, Mauritania and Western Sahara.
Almost 200,000 people live in the four districts or wilayas of Smara, Awserd, Dakhla & Laayoune.
All camps lie within 20-60km of each other with the exception of Dakhla which lies 200km away.
Each camp is divided into small villages called daïras.
Each daïra is divided into four neighbourhoods.
The daïras and wilayas are named after towns in the lands they have occupied.
Within the Sahrawi refugee camps, a government in exile has been organized.
The majority of people live in tents known as khaimas or in numbered adobe buildings with no drinking water and with no means of livelihood.
Each neighbourhood and group of tents has a designated manager who takes responsibility for and organizes community life.
The camp’s administrative centre is Rabouni, where protocol services, the presidency, ministries and other administrations are housed.
All adults living in the camps must join a committee.
There are five committees: Health, Education, Supplies, Economic Development & Justice, and Social Affairs.
Organization and the committees are run by women from the daïras, because all men must either join the Army or study.
