When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

savoury snacks

: zoutjes would be crisps and such wouldn't they?

Agreed - mini-chips, savoury biscuits, salted bread twists etc.

deep-fried finger food
An 'appetizer' precedes the first course of a meal ('amuse' in Dutch), whereas bittergarnituur does not. 'Savoury snacks' is very general and could, IMO, refer to any type of snack that isn't sweet: crisps, nuts, zoutjes, bittergarnituur, etc., etc.

Coming back to Sindy's comment, it appears that bittergarnituur often includes hot and cold snacks. But not always. Some caterers make a distinction, e.g.:
"Bittergarnituur
Assortiment van warme gefrituurde mini hapjes inclusief sausjes. Minimale afname 50 stuks.
Standaard koude hapjes
Assortiment eenvoudige koude hapjes
Luxe koude hapjes
Gevarieerd assortiment luxe gegarneerde koude hapjes..."

: Bittergarnituur can be anything from cheese to bitterballen to fancy snacks, it need not necessarily be deep-fried.

disagree |
Toiny Van der Putte-Rademakers
: A "bittergarnituur" consists of deep-fried snacks among other things, but is not limited to them.

As I said, my experience is otherwise. Apparently I go to different borrels than the compilers of Van Dale... :-)

Thanks, Kitty. Apparently there are two schools of thought on this one :-)

deep-fried snacks
I think of bittergarnituur as bitterbollen, kaassouffles. mini loempjes, vlaametjes, etc and these are always deep fried and (mostly) served warm.
hors d'oeuvres

Emma Cox
: That is delusions of grandeur for what in effect is deep fried minced eyeballs, lumps of cheese and dodgy cold meats...
Yes, but far too over the top for bittergarnituur. Hors d'oeuvres implies something with culinary prowess. Good suggestion though.

Has nothing to do with 'grandeur' - just a commonly used term.
